And the whirlpools sleep

If you start with salt and apples, you must of course arrange them so they are pleasing to the eye, and pleasant to taste. But as well-balanced as this crisp fruit and saltivating saltiness is, there is yet more to add. You must toss in a great deal of wonder, of silent observation (the eyes of Inari, the fox who waits), uncertainty, standing still to feel the current of the situation before plunging in with thoughts, sometimes misfired, sometimes a bullseye. You must add a heaping helping of laughter, of luck, of finding happiness in life by closing eyes and flowing through the cracks of the ordinary---still one with the ordinary, but finding ways around the dry brittle sand flats that have not seen the rain of thought in centuries. You must mix in irrational fears (the hanging black tentacled specter of death-come-too-soon), self-doubt, hardheadedness, slowness, laziness, a hot temper and cold salt tears, for without the dry hard bits, the mixture would never rise. Do not forget, at this point, to catalyze everything with Them, the Old Gods and Goddesses, the stories that move like fire under the earth and rise through the mouth in exultation, the plants and stones that whisper their litanies, the sex of the forest that rides with no control, the blue peace behind the eyes of prayer. You must then sweeten with secrets, cactus liquor, a marriage fallen into like a hammock on a spring day full of sun, clove cigarette smoke, moonlight, open windows, luxurious auburn hair. You must spice with gossip, a sharp tongue, tangled limbs of young women. Sift in liberal doses of happy nerdity, the video games, the stitches that transform into living artwork, the dreams of places that have never been, for this is the base that makes this young life a tangible sweet.

If you start with salt and apples, the basics, the red and white core of flesh, you must not forget the other things, but you must rest on the basics, and you must convey this recipe in words the best you know how.

This is the writing and personal journal of [info]terra_firma. I've gotten really awful about keeping my handwritten journal, but I still think it's important to have a private space of one's own. Since I spend a lot of time around a computer, and type pretty fast, I decided a second LJ was a good option :3.

Feel free to add me, but don't expect many entries. I plan on keeping most of them private.
